Halloween is loved by everyone, adults and kids alike but let's face it there can be a hell of a lot of waste once the night's celebrations are over! Decorations for both inside and outside the house, candy, junk/party foods and costumes for all the family can add up to a full trash can and empty wallets. Fortunately, with a little forethought and planning you CAN have a green Halloween.
You need treats right - but by taking a little extra time you can have candy that is both fun and still be healthy for the kids. Organic treats aren't full of artificial ingredients and still taste great. These are easy to find online. Here are some organic Halloween candy you may like to consider.
YummyEarth Organic Lollipops come in fun assorted flavors such as Razzmatazz Berry, Cheeky Lemon & Wet-Face Watermelon to name a few. Envirokidz Organic Koala Crisp Chocolate Cereal Enviropakz are another fun idea - with the cute Koala on the pack it has an additional bonus, it is recyclable. Percentage of sales are also donated to wildlife and habitat conservation which will give the kids an added benefit while they are eating all those treats. Other ideas are fair trade chocolates, also available online. If you like to bake, why not give out your own homemade treats?
Decorations & Party Supplies for any holiday can be expensive so why not use what you have on hand or take from mother nature's larder. Using natural items you have in your garden such as falling leaves and branches from trees can really give an incredible effect. Pumpkins and apples are also a cheap and easy way to turn you space into the perfect Halloween place. The added bonus is all of these items can go straight into the compost heap, turning into mulch next spring! Beeswax candles are an eco choice so how can you resist the Candle by the Hour 80-Hour Halloween Candle made of 100% beeswax in a rustic pumpkin mold. Maybe tea lights are more your style, then you will love these Tea-Light Candles in Halloween orange & black complete with cotton wicks. Perfect for people with allergies or asthma. Don't forget the recyclable party supplies. There are plenty of eco friendly options available. Try or crayons which can be composted. Of course, just using your regular plates and cutlery is the most environmentally choice!
Halloween Costumes can also be recycled and any eco tips will revolve around reusing or recycling. You don't always have to buy new and Halloween is no exception. You can rent, make your own or repurpose older bought costumes. Try making your costumes out of old clothes if you can or enjoy sewing instead of throwing them out. A cheap way is to trawl the second hand shops for low cost pieces or fabric remnants to reuse. The same concept can be used to make eco friendly treat bags for the kids. The great thing about bags made from old fabrics is they can be easily personalized by your kids using paints or crayons (non toxic, of course) or gluing some of those Fall leaves you used earlier to decorate the house! If you need to purchase fabric, sustainable types like hemp can be good choices. Even if you hate to sew there are loads of options to buy hemp totes or something similar. Just try to forgo the plastic bags and you're already ahead.
Once Halloween is over anything that can't be reused next year will just be put into the compost heap or your recycle bin. Of course, you may want to buy a new costume each year so what about donating the old one or giving it to someone who may not have the funds for a new costume. You'll feel great if you do this. Every little bit helps!
